ABOUT Patricia Chárraga

Legal, financial, and audiovisual translator, and English-Spanish conference interpreter

I was born in Mexico and developed an early interest in learning English. I pursued a career as an English teacher, providing instruction while working at a law firm, where I completed my first legal translations. I was authorized to serve as a certified translator in Mexico during this time.

I completed the Translation and Interpretation program at The Berlitz Schools of Languages, earned a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), and obtained a Master's Degree in Audiovisual Professional Translation from the University of Granada (UGR). Additionally, I have completed multiple Legal Translation programs at the Escuela Libre de Derecho, under the instruction of Javier F. Becerra, Esq., author of the only bilingual dictionaries covering the Mexican and North American legal systems, which serve as key references for professional translators and interpreters. As part of my commitment to professional growth, I continuously engage in specialized training at universities, institutions, and translators’ associations, including courses in financial translation, to enhance the quality of my services.

Education is reinforced by experience, and my 18-year tenure as an interpreter and translator for a major U.S.-based multinational corporation operating in 27 countries provided me with a strong foundation in these fields. This experience also gave me the confidence to establish my independent practice in late 2019. After passing the required examinations, I was authorized by both Mexico’s Federal Supreme Court of Justice and the Superior Court of Justice of Mexico City to serve as a certified translator, assisting in their legal proceedings. I have also worked as a conference interpreter for in-person and remote meetings.

Beyond my professional work, I am dedicated to giving back to the community by donating my time and expertise to institutions that support those in need, such as Iniciativa Ciudadana, which assists vulnerable individuals.

I am currently an associate member of the American Translators Association (ATA) in the United States, as well as a member of the Asociación Española de Traductores, Correctores e Intérpretes (Spanish Association of Translators, Editors, and Interpreters), and the Club de los Grandes Traductores (Club of Great Translators), in Spain. Additionally, I participate in various international networks of interpreters and translators.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Both translation and interpretation involve transferring ideas from one language to another. However, translation pertains to written language, while interpretation deals with spoken language. There are various types of translation and interpretation, each with its complexities and requirements. Therefore, before hiring any professional, it is essential to ensure they possess the necessary skills and expertise for your specific project.

Each translation project is unique and priced accordingly. For example, translating a well-structured text that follows proper grammatical and spelling rules, includes clear abbreviations, lacks complex formatting, and is provided in an editable format will be less costly than translating an illegible copy of a poorly written, difficult-to-read document with unclear abbreviations, and complex formatting. In the latter case, additional time is required to decipher the content, research abbreviations, consult with the client, and replicate the original formatting.

Interpretation is a cognitively demanding task, and a single interpreter cannot work alone for more than an hour and a half. For assignments exceeding this duration, two interpreters are required to alternate and share the workload.

A full-day interpretation service consists of eight working hours plus a one-hour break for meals. A half-day service consists of up to four hours. However, half-day services are not priced at exactly half of a full day’s rate; rather, they are slightly higher due to the time interpreters must invest in studying the subject matter, traveling to and from the event location, and their limited availability for other assignments on that day.

Additionally, interpretation equipment such as microphones, receivers, headsets, and soundproof booths may be required and must be rented separately, adding to the overall cost. Each interpretation service is unique, and understanding the specific needs in advance is essential for a successful event.

In most cases, it takes longer to revise and correct a poor translation—whether produced by artificial intelligence or an unqualified individual—than to translate the document from scratch.

This situation can be compared to an engineer repairing a building constructed without proper foundations and poorly built walls. While some parts of the structure might be salvageable, it is often easier and faster to demolish and rebuild it properly rather than attempting to reinforce an unstable foundation.

Therefore, a professional translator may decline such revision projects or charge the same rate as a full translation, as the work would need to be redone entirely.

Without translation, I would be limited to the borders of my own country. The translator is my most important ally. He introduces me to the world.
